  1. WELCOME TO BIODIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS
  2. VOLUME 1: AQUATIC HABITATS

  6. This CD-ROM is a field guide to plants and animals of Illinois which live in the state's aquatic habitats.
  7. You can search the database of species using a text-based query similar to the ones found on various
  8. internet search engines. In addition, there is a 'guided search' screen, which assists you to find a
  9. species with pull-down menus and maps.
  10.  
  11. Once you have performed a search, all species matching the criteria you entered will be displayed
  12. as thumbnail-sized images. When you click on the image of one of these species, a detailed information
  13. screen will appear, providing larger pictures and data on the species' features, behaviors, range, and
  14. much more. You can print this information by pressing the 'print' button. (See printing information below.)

  16. Also provided are explanatory sections on scientific names, biodiversity, and a comprehensive list of
  17. reference materials.

  20. MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

  22. Macintosh
  23. System OS X, G4 or better processor, and CD or DVD-ROM drive
  24.  
  25. Windows
  26. Windows 2000 XP, Pentium III processor or better, and CD or DVD-ROM drive
  27.

On both the Macintosh and Windows systems this program works best with the display set to 16-bit (high color) or 24-bit (true color). The program will function with a display setting of 8-bit color, but you will not see the wide range of colors contained in the photographs and you may experience color shifts after printing.

  32. HOW TO USE THE PROGRAM

  34. Macintosh
  35. Place the disc into your computer's CD-ROM drive.
  36. Double-click the "BIODIVERSITY" icon on the CD-ROM.
  37.  
  38. Windows
  39. The "Biodiversity" Cd will automatically launch when the CD is inserted in a CD-ROM drive. Please allow a few moments for the program to load.

  41. If the autoplay feature is disabled on your machine, please do the following:
  42. - Place the CD into your CD-ROM drive
  43. - Locate the "Biodiversity.exe" file on the CD-ROM and double-click to launch

  47. PRINTING
  48.  
  49. Printing in Biodiversity of Illinois is handled by Adobe Acrobat Reader to ensure that the printed pages appear the same on all systems. Acrobat Reader 7.0 is provided on this CD-ROM. If you do not already have Acrobat Reader on your computer, you must install it in order to print from Biodiversity of Illinois.

  51. If you have currently have Acrobat Professional installed on your computer, you must install Acrobat 7.0 Reader and allow it to become the default viewer (this is a selection during the install process) or the PDFs will not function correctly within the program.

  53. Acrobat installer instructions:
  54. Before installing Acrobat 7.0, YOU MUST REMOVE ANY OLDER VERSIONS OF ACROBAT FROM YOUR SYSTEM.
  55. Failure to do this will cause printing problems.

  57. Macintosh:
  58. Double-click the 'Acrobat 7.0 Reader Installer' icon on this CD-ROM. Follow the instructions on the installer screen.

  60. Windows:
  61. Double-click the Acrobat7.exe icon on this CD-ROM. Follow the instructions on the installer screen.

  63. Use the printer control panel to select the default printer before printing from Biodiversity of Illinois. You must have the correct printer drivers for your printer already installed on your system.

On Windows systems, you will see a print dialog box a few seconds after you click the 'print' button. Verify the settings in that dialog box and press OK or PRINT. You may continue to use Biodiversity of Illinois while you are waiting for the printer to process the page. On some systems, the print dialog box may not appear the first time a print command is issued. Try printing a second time if this occurs.

  67. On Macintosh systems, you will see a screen display of the printed page in addition to the print dialog box. This will disappear when you have clicked the OK or PRINT button.

  70. PRINTING PROBLEMS
  71.  
  72. If you are unable to print from Biodiversity of Illinois, you may have one or more of these
  73. problems:
  74.  
  75. You do not have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer. Use the Acrobat installer provided on this CD-ROM to perform the installation. Remove any older versions of Acrobat Reader before  installing.
  76.  
  77. Your printer is turned off, out of paper, or disconnected from your computer or from the network.
  78.  
  79. Your printer driver is out of date. Contact your printer manufacturer for the latest software driver.
  80.  
  81. The Adobe Acrobat PostScript option is set for Level 2 PostScript and your printer does not support Level 2. (The printed page may contain incorrect characters, square boxes where text should appear, or other unreadable text.)  In the Acrobat print dialog, try selecting PostScript Level 1 compatibility or select a different printer.

  83. There is not enough RAM memory to keep both the printing software (Adobe Acrobat Reader) and
  84. Biodiversity of Illinois (Macromedia Director Projector) open. Install more memory on your computer.

  86. If the display colors are altered or incorrect after printing, use the control panel to set the display to 16-bit (high color) or 24-bit (true color) and restart the program.

  88. Microsoft Windows-specific problems:
  89.  
  90. Your registry file contains outdated or wrong information about the program that should handle .PDF files. Reinstall Adobe Acrobat Reader, using the default settings of the installer.
  91.  
  92. You installed Adobe Acrobat Reader in a custom directory instead of taking the default. In this case, if the path to the Acrobat Reader application contains a space, Windows itself will return an incorrect path to the Application. Reinstall Adobe Acrobat, using the default settings of the installer.

  94. Either Acrobat Reader or the PDF files have a long network path not mapped to a drive. Map the network path to a drive letter using Map Network Drive under Network Neighborhood.

  98. SEARCH ERRORS

  100. If you experience problems in searching or the program locking up after performing multiple searches, close out of the program and restart it.
